Who doesn’t love a good pizza? Our American adaptation of this Italian classic remains wildly popular – and I’m not just talking about my house! But what’s better than a good pizza? A great pizza! That’s what this Deluxe Truffle Oil Homemade Pizza recipe delivers to your dinner table. Don’t settle for a $5 box of cardboard with cheese, when you can quickly and easily serve up some quality pizza tonight!
The key to making good quality pizza is walking past that small pizza cupboard at your local grocer and grabbing the best, fresh ingredients. I got everything I needed for this recipe from my local Publix grocery store. Their bakery section not only sells various kinds of fresh pizza dough, but they even offer pre-rolled pizza dough. Now, I still have some mad pizza tossing skills from my first job at The Beach Bar spinning pies. But, man, spinning dough from scratch can be messy. It often looks like it rained flour in my kitchen when I’m done. No thanks. That’s where this pre-rolled pizza dough is awesome. Open the package, stretch it lightly and you’re in business. It’s a short trip from there to delicious pizza.
Deluxe Truffle Oil Homemade Pizza – The Sauce
Canned sauce is no fun. So, how about we make our own? It’s easy to do. Grab a small can of Tomato Sauce with Garlic, Parmesan and Oregano and put it into a small mixing bowl . Add in one teaspoon of sugar and thyme each. Next, add a tablespoon of tomato paste and mix until the paste and spices are well blended into the sauce. This should be at a consistency where it doesn’t run when poured onto your sauce, but can still be spread around with little effort. You can add more paste if it’s still too runny.
Deluxe Truffle Oil Homemade Pizza – Time to Top
Now, its time to top the pizza. Toss your pizza dough until it’s big enough to fully cover your pan. I like it to hang over by about half an inch, then I pull it back with my fingers. This makes sure it doesn’t shrink as you top it. Here’s a video on how to toss pizza dough.
Pour half of the sauce into the center of the dough and spread toward the edges using short semi-circles until the sauce is about 1/2 inch from the edge all the way around. Sprinkle your cheese on next. Pro tip: you’ll use less cheese and everything will sit more evenly if you put your cheese on immediately after your sauce.
For my pepperoni, I suggest skipping the pre-packaged small pepperoni in the grocer’s little pizza area and going to the deli counter. Get 1/4 pound of Boar’s Head Deli Style Pepperoni sliced thin. The slices are much larger and it’s often cheaper than the whole list. Next, sprinkle on your diced onions. Follow that with your diced bell peppers. Then, it’s time for your secret weapons.
Deluxe Truffle Oil Homemade Pizza – The Secret Weapons
Instead of boring regular bacon, sprinkle on some pancetta that you’ve pre-cooked in a pan. This is the “Italian Bacon” and gives an awesome meaty flavor on top. Sprinkle on some shredded parmesan. Lastly, the key to all of this – swirl on a light amount of white truffle oil. You don’t need much – a little goes a long way here!
Bake the dough in the oven according to the directions on your pan. The pizza is done when the bottom is golden brown. I usually start checking it a few minutes before the time it says on the package to make sure it doesn’t burn. Allow the pizza to cool for about 3 minutes before slicing. Serve with a nice side salad and enjoy!
